Swades – Capturing (N)ew (R)ealistic (I)ndians

December 2004 it was, and during the supposedly winter night I along with my brother and couple of other friends of ours wanted to get warm so we decided to go to a movie and fortunately we got to see the best picture of the year, we wanted to warmth and we got it in an “A/C” theatre.

The creator had a vision, which unfortunately hasn’t gone well with the audience. The perception about the “NRI’s”was spoken about in a different tone. I for one always believed that the so-called “NRI’s” are not what they are portrayed to be in the films. It’s different. The Director certainly has lived and breathed this film for a couple of years atleast. Hats off Mr.Gowariker for giving us such a wonderful lesson.

Here I would like to remind couple of scenes where the director has come up with real and true situations to emphasis that the “NRI’s” are not just Money centred.

(A) School scene where Gayathri actually ridicules Shah rukh Khan for not knowing the names of the Rivers and not knowing the newly formed states in our country. Here Shah Rukh comes up with the right answers and stuns Gayathri.
(B) Secondly the scene where Shah Rukh is asked by his aunt to get the money from a farmer. Here the director has managed to come up with an unbelievably great scene. The sympathy shown by Shah Rukh on the farmer and eventually giving him money instead of getting it from him just about sums up the good characters that an NRI has.

But the scene-stealer of them all is the scene where Shah Rukh is coaxed to buy a pot of water from a small station vendor. Even the beast would have cried in this scène, am just a human. We are rated as one of the top countries in the world as far as the economic status is concerned, but we still buy a sachet of water for 1Rupee to quench our thirst and the worst part is we pay 1 Rupee to use the Urinal to let out the water that we had in the first place.

The song “Yeh jo des hai ” rips my heart out every time I hear. I am sure many of the “NRI’s” would be feeling the same way as I do. It’s unfortunate that the song of the year has fallen on the deaf ears. For once the Hindi film industry is able to come up with this masterpiece and yet very ordinary films like “Veer Zaara” and “Main Hoon na” run to packed houses. The coincidence is all these films feature Shah Rukh Khan. Mr. Gowariker continue making Great Indian Films.

So lets all stop criticising the “NRI’s” for they are Indians too, as a matter of fact I feel sorry for them that they have to carry a proof of their identity 24*7 and show it to prove that they are a normal civilian just as the others.
Finally, the one thing that blows my fuse away is the fact that the so-called “Resident Indians” and majority of them don’t know in what order our “Tri colour “ should be. We should be ashamed for that. Pity the “NRI’s“ are being cornered for that as well.

Please protect our Pride.

Right I need to take a break, I’ll have some water. Oops I don’t have a one Rupee Coin !!.

I was about to blog on swades, infact; I wanted that to be my next blog. Nevertheless, sathya u have deftly stolen my thunder. Anyways, i’m ctrl +Ving my views here…

    Disclaimer: Confused NRI’s

I would have chosen “Your heart is where your roots are” as the tagline for swades over “We the people” albeit latter conveys the quintessential mood of this film conveying a powerful theme in the simplest and subtlest way possible.

Sometimes, simple things are hard to explain, let alone portray it on the screen. The message delivered through swades is not only clear and honest, it is also a realistic litmus test for NRI’s who wanna give something back to their motherland, but don’t know where to start. In the film, the protagonist has many inhibitions and apprehensions before spotting the underlying issue faced by the village people. Eventually, he achieves the impossible. Although he enters the village armed with bottled mineral water and a comfy caravan, it doesn’t take much time for him to realise the conditions in which his fellowmen are living in. Even Gandhi was in a same situation when he saw the wretched conditions that his own people are struggling against the odds everyday in their lives, wilfully forcing himself to wear kaadhi throughout the rest of his life. In a way, this protagonist is also a gandhian.

I guess ashutosh must have attended mani’s storyboard sessions secretly, because scenes from AKK/ yuva and swades match up very closely.

For Instance: Where one of the protagonist in Yuva says: “coca cola vippom, soap vippom, aana, inga endha poruppum eduthukka mattamula” is classic MTV’s one tight slap for those who shuns away from taking up any basic responsibility in their community. In the same way, shah rukh confronts the village people by askin “ Why do we have to wait for government to make our lives better? Its time for us to step up”. It’s a classic leaf from mani’s book, nothing more to add. The best part about the movie is that it doesn’t have any

NO offence to Indian youth, but still, they need the “oomph” factor and that extra “dum” which pretty much determines the success of any Indian movie. It’s high time to grow up, face harsh reality, and shoulder responsibility. Its also a wake up call for those NRI’s who tend to forget their roots, whinge about their homeland in a fake accent. I have two words for them – Watch Swades.

Swades stays different, so there lies its indifference towards box office records. Swades – undoubtedly – light years ahead of its times, it deserves more appreciation for its sincere effort in India, than in some elite foreign film festivals. Kudos ashutosh !

As I’m writing this endnote, “yeh jo des hai” has looped around 15 times in the background. That sums it all up.

Check this Link □ – an inspiration to swades, I believe.

That was a eye opener of a story.

What Anil and Madhu did for the village of Bilgaon is a splendid example of what we Indians need to sit and think. Can we do this? In what way can we contribute...

I myself am part of the billion, who seriously debate about India.. complaining first the corrupt government.. next the huge population.. the list is endless.. and more often is enough to put in rest the debate, thinking yes.. It has been like this.. and probably will be like this..

But what are we doing to make it any better. Sometimes we do feel helpless.. what can an IT guy skilled in coding..do.. even if he wanted to contribute.. Money is surely not what we are looking at. Then what are we looking at?

santh, we cant generalise all the films as 'total crap'.

swades is one incredible journey of an NRI who wants to reconnect with his roots and in this process he discovers his lost identity.

If money would have been the soul objective of the film, then the movie would have trailed on the lines of 'Pardes' (by subash gay, yeah u read it right, he is gay)- another crap movie with a skewed projection of NRI's. Ironically, this also features shah rukh as an NRI.

so watch swades, may be you would definitely change ur views, NRI recommended !
