The “Flag Factor”

The “Flag Factor”

It seems like a coincidence that my previous column was also about Patriotism and this one’s just along the same line. About 25 days ago or to be precise couple of days before the much anticipated India Vs Pakistan series started the Indian Ministry laid this dubious law regarding the sporting of Indian “Tricolour” by a civilian.

The Ministry said that it is an insult to sport the flag on the sporting Gear of the sportspersons and in particular they pointed finger at Sachin Tendulkar and Narain Karthikeyan. As we all know that Sachin used to sport the tricolour on his Helmet just under the Indian board’s crest and similarly Narain had painted his Helmet top with the “Tricolour”. What is wrong in that?

The Ministry has asked to remove the flag and instead has given permission to use the Tricolour without the “Asokha Chakra”. This is Ridiculous. Sachin has been sporting this “Tricolour” for over 8 years now, but all of a sudden this is an offence now. Narain just 2 days before his F1 debut was asked to remove it and he did it promptly, but Narain shot back at the Ministry by saying” If I had wanted I would have used the space to endorse some product which would have increased my bank balance but I wanted my country’s flag on it but now I am being denied.”

Hasn’t the Ministry been caught off guard in this? Now my question as an Indian is what is so wrong in displaying the flag on your flannels or sporting Gears? If this is wrong then why is the flag being used in advertisements?

We should be proud of those men who bring laurels to the country by waging battle on and off the field instead of making a mountain of a mole. Sachin still has the “Tricolour” inside his kit bag is another matter. Any person who’s an Indian regardless of his/her presence in the land should be able to carry the Flag as long as he / she doesn’t treat it disrespectfully.

So let’s all show the support in this regard and join them in bringing laurels to our “Bharath”.

Swades, Bose – the forgotten hero, patriotism…… I’m glad to see more posts in this space about and for India !

Sathya, i know that u live-eat-sleep cricket, nevertheless, i cant imagine the fact that u went to the extent of taking a peek at sachin's inside. the kit bag, i mean!

Jokes apart ... very interesting post! I donno why ministry is making a big fuss about this trivial issue, although there is no issue at all. Aren’t they supposed to run the country instead of policing around who’s wearing which color underwear ! What the $%#$?

A few months back, Australian government picked on a ww II veteran and warned him for hoisting australian flag in his own home? He retaliated by going live on a premiere TV channel against the govt. Immediately, the govt acknowledged his protest and granted some leniency towards him. In this matter, Aus-govt, Indian govt stand at the same level. NO BIG DIFF. I remember reading about how indian CBFC maintained its tight lip for chopping off many crucial scenes in the film ROJA stating unethical use of indian flag. Mani Rathnam had to reconstruct the same scenes and edit some to convince the board. The film bagged the national award for best picture, awarded by the same ministry. Why do they have so many discrepancies in their policy?

My point is, why ministry considers itself as a sole saviour of india’s symbols / flags? Is it just because they contest in elections and win or is it because they can talk hours and hours of useless shit? If they think they have the right, they are ludicrously wrong. The funniest part is, ministry’s desparate attempt to pacify sachin/narain by alowing them to sport indian flag without ashok charkra? What difference does it gonna make?

As long as fools chair the ministry, we won’t run out of topics to blog! wat say?

Exactly da, u hit the nail on the head. As long as Fools rule the Country everyone seems to get affected by the foolishness bug if i may call it that way.

Iam absolutely in support of the the guy who has hoisted his country's flag. i mean who the hell are these idiots who boss around by not allowing to sport one's own flag.

    where are we going?

i accept ur comments, even i was astonished when i heard the news.
a flag without a chakra, is not an Indian flag at all.

as iam in s'pore now, i find how the national day ie., their independence day is being celbrated, here u have a lot of housing block with several storeys and u'll find the national in each and every storey, 2months before the national day.
but one thing, eventhough it is in front of my home i could not feel the happiness, which i get when a small flag is pinned in our dresses on a indepence day.
patriotism should be felt and u cannot make them feel.
as u say if the country is going to ruled by such fools probably u n me have to face more idiotic statement than these.
