Coach’s Role

Inconsequential of any walk of life there has to be someone behind to direct traffic, be it in the normal 9 to 5 job or school or sports. Umm Sports and my god are we entering in to an ocean.

Let’s just dwell on cricket for a while because that is where the epicenter for the disaster lies. Ever since we were shown the door from the world cup Gre(at)g Chappell has been shown the chappal, not the one to believe in the myths but this particular one about “Great cricketers Don’t make a great coach” does make you want to believe, if we go by the history Kapil Dev, Javed Miandad, Don Bradman, Gordon Greenidge ,Vivian Richards and so on so forth. But what really is a coach’s role in this whole drama?

They are meant to be sort of one who will nod along for the good decisions or are they the kingmaker? It is not as if the ordinary cricketers who have turned coaches have had it as Peaches and cream, they have had their fair share of their brickbats as well.
A coach can utmost corrects the bad technique of a player; he just can’t go out and correct himself.
The Greatest storyteller in Cricket Ian Chappell incidentally happens to be the much-maligned Greg’s elder brother is not a great advocate for coaches in any sport. He’s right to a certain extent. Just to highlight his point the greatest cricketer to walk this planet Sir Garfield Sobers never had a coach accompanying him or his team but he still managed to score close to 9000 test runs and 234 wickets and around 100 catches. This is unparalleled in Cricket. Our very own Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar never had coaches till about their sunset of their careers still they performed the way they did.
I am not saying coaches should not exist at all but my point is it will fetch you the profits that you expect in an individual sport rather than a team sport.

The Supposedly very great coach of all time Late Bob Woolmer made a name for himself when he was associated with the South African team and absolutely wretched time when he was wit the Pakistan Team till his death recently. Does that mean that Bob Woolmer had forgotten his coaching skills no it is plain and simple, in a team sport an individual is as good as his team, Classic cases being Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar performing in a losing course umpteen times.
So I guess coaches are like teachers where in they have to intervene and correct the bugs that creep in to an individual’s game. John Buchanan was not a great cricketer himself but still he made a name for himself since he was with the Ruthless and Invincible Aussies. The Aussies adapt a completely different policy as far as their sports are concerned, for instance they brought in an American Pitcher to help their Cricketers in throwing the ball from the deep flat and at lightning pace. You know that’s innovation we can also try something like this in the off-season, we can hire a football Goal keeper to enhance our Diving skills, things like these will be of great help rather than to have an Ex Sports person wearing the team’s jersey and just play with laptop just to prove to the world that the coach is Techno Savvy as well.

There has to be a way out.

In india coaches can do very little for the team with BCCI playing the politics. What would happen if Ricky Pointing doesn't perform well in a series of matches? A well performing player would replace him though he's a captain. That's not the case in India with Saurav and Dravid leading the team when they performed poorly. With cricket having become a cash crop racking in over 1000 crores a year we can't expect a player who's not in form to step down.

How many times have our player hit the stumps directly in a match?. How many times have they thrown the ball directly to the keeper?

Set a yardstick for fielding, bowling and batting and rest anyone who doesn't meet the standard.
Appointing a coach for each field is a good idea. But this should be extended to the junior team as well for India to become a good team.

As you sow so shall you reap.

    regards,
    Karthik V.

    Sathya,

    Points in your argument:

    1. Bring in a specialised coach - try out something new

    2. Experienced cricketers may not always turn out to be great coaches (for india)

Both the steps would yield some results, nevertheless, may / may not solve your question: 'is there a way out ?'

    My Points:

Self Sufficiency: To explain this better, we(indian players) need to take a step back and ponder over this question:

Do i need a coach? If so, what is that i'm expecting from him which would improve my game?

Just imagine, if every player in our team is self sufficient(to an extent) to correct their mistakes by themselves then coach can concentrate on what he's supposed to do ie, Game plan / strategy - more important stuff.

From your eg:(Sir Garfield Sobers, Kapil, Sunny)

I agree with karthik - to weed out politics, the system(bcci) should be transparent in every possible way.

11 self sufficient players, 1 coach ,1 goal - ideal system!

    wat say ?

ps: BTW, Sathya - welcome back to blogging, fantastic post !

    Hi Sathya..........
If u want my comments on the role of a coach.........
very simple a coach can only guide u the way its left to the players to travel.........
I am justify my comments with an activity we all will do one day..
See u can coach a person ,counsel ,show him CD's /Books abt First Night......
But what counts how he does it, when scheduled for the event
So dont take my justification as something ugly......
But bottom line u have to perform on ur given day on the cricket field
    bye

    Mates,

I agree with what Karthi and Vijay say and to an extent what Sami says, Lead the horse to the pond, horse will decide to drink or not to.

Vijay, Strategy, game plan Mate you are an aussie(well literally) that will never ever happen in India and nevr by an Indian.

Perhaps India's Greatest captain would have been Ravi Shastri but then he was never a given a chance well except for 2 Tests, similarly we have an abundant talent but we don't like them.
classic case is Robin Singh he is there as a fielding coach, you might as well try him as full time coach.
As one of my colleagues said yesterday BCCI is "all fart and no Shit".

Let it be Sobers, Bradman, Kapil sunny etc... the fact of the matter is what you do on the field is more important.
I can bet my bottom dollar there is absolutely no way that a coach or for that matter a team management's plan works out. Its all about what a bowler/fielder/Batsmen does that particular ball. Thinking on your shoes is what matters first.
Tennis a popular sport flaunts a rule saying that on field coaching is prohibited. The player himself is the coach. Imagine Roger federer considered to be one of the best ever, does not have a coach. Moreover thinks he does not need one. still wins runs ruthless.

Same is the case with the aussies. They have a brilliant side. I have no qualms in saying that George bush considered to be the dumbest president ever leader would be succesful if he were to coach the Aussies.

Difference lies in the cricketing structure. Aussies have a brilliant foundation with less politics and high transparency. And especially no zonal influence.

Following are the few steps that can be followed to form a better team:

    1. Selectors should be assigned to choose players from different zones.Eg(I am a selector from south, should choose players from the north after watching them for a season)
2.There are 5 zones in india. NEWS and Central. FIve kind of wickets should be prepared North(Seaming and swinging track),East (spinning)West (batsmen' paradise)south (bounce)Central(mixed bag. So depending on the tracks if there is a tour abroad or if there is a touring team depending on their weakness the board should choose the zone for the camp.
    3. BCCI should give a serious thought about five test series.
    4.Twenty 20 should be banned.
5.Should not live in the past.

above mentioned are all my suggestions.

Even after all this BCCI wants a coach, then my choice would be either Keith arthurten or our very own Ajay jadeja. They examples of street smart cricketers.

Now this should make sathya happy...

    great post.
